Crystal Casino
Sabuk, Korea

The Crystal Casino project design goal was to revitalize the economy of a former coal mining region with viable and profitable venues and restore the local environment to promote habitation, and provide a model of future leisure-enhanced destinations. Included in the plan was a strategy for environmental reclamation. The mining industry had put the ecology of the area in a state of imbalance. The goal of reclamation was to restore the site's ecology and

aesthetic quality to pre-mining conditions.

Amenta&CO were selected to engage in a design competition against two other firms, and submitted a comprehensive development strategy both sensitive to and inclusive of the regional history. Mr. Amenta created a mythological tale involving crystals discovered in a local mine, upon which he centered the design theme.
